How to Print My Custom T-Shirt Designs Using a DTF Printer

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a popular method for producing vibrant and durable T-shirt designs. The design is printed onto special DTF film using a compatible DTF printer, coated with hot-melt adhesive powder, cured, and then transferred onto the fabric using a heat press.

1. Prepare the Design

Before printing, make sure the artwork is positioned correctly and has the desired size for your T-shirt. Load high-quality DTF transfer film into the printer and make sure the DTF ink cartridges are installed correctly.

Use the appropriate RIP software to set up the artwork. For dark-colored T-shirts, make sure a white ink layer is included so the colors remain bright and vibrant.


2. Print the Design

Send the artwork to the DTF printer and print it onto the coated side of the DTF film.

The printer will normally print the color layer first, followed by the white ink layer. Check the print carefully to make sure there are no missing details, ink problems, or incorrect colors.

While the printed ink is still wet, evenly apply hot-melt adhesive powder over the printed area.

Shake off the excess powder carefully. Make sure the powder only remains where the printed ink is located.

Place the powdered film into a DTF curing oven or use an appropriate curing method recommended for your equipment.

The adhesive powder must melt properly and form an even adhesive layer without damaging the artwork.


3. Heat Press the Design

Place the T-shirt flat on the heat press and remove any wrinkles. For the best result, pre-press the shirt for a few seconds to remove moisture and flatten the fabric.

Position the DTF film on the T-shirt with the printed design facing the fabric.

Use the temperature, pressure, and pressing time recommended for your DTF film and adhesive powder. Different materials may require different settings, so always test the transfer before producing multiple shirts.

Allow the transfer to cool or follow the peeling instructions of your DTF film. Carefully peel the film away from the T-shirt.

If any part of the design has not transferred properly, stop peeling and press it again according to the recommended settings.


4. Final Press


For better durability and finish, place a protective sheet or parchment paper over the printed design and perform a short final press according to the transfer manufacturer's instructions.

Allow the shirt to cool completely before folding or packaging.


Tip: Always perform a test print and transfer before starting a large production run. DTF printer settings, film, powder, ink, fabric, temperature, pressure, and pressing time can affect the final result.
